Join us in celebrating All Buffleheads Day with eclectic musician, Ed Peekeekoot and local bufflehead biologist, KJ Finley.

All Buffleheads Day (ABD) marks the first appearance of the bufflehead, the “Spirit Duck”, to their saltwater homes on the west and east coasts of Canada. The world’s most punctual migrant, they arrive very nearly on the 298th day of the earth’s cycle, which falls on October 14th in this Leap year. ABD is a scientific constant based on twenty years of study in Shoal Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Sidney, B.C.. Unlike Groundhogs Day, ABD is the basis of an equation that accurately predicts weather.

Ed Peekeekoot is a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and story-teller who captivates audiences of all ages with various styles of music, from blazing guitar to foot stomping fiddle. Ed is from the Ahtahkakoop Cree First Nation in Saskatchewan where he was raised in a musical family. Ed was twice nominated as the BC Country Music Association’s “Instrumentalist of the Year” and his CD “in the key of cree” was nominated as “Best Country CD” in the Aboriginal People’s Choice Music Awards.

KJ (Kerry) Finley is a biologist who has conducted long-term field studies of arctic marine mammals, including pioneering studies of the Bowhead Whale, supported by World Wildlife Fund and National Geographic. In 1999, he began studies on the Bufflehead following them from their summer homes in the interior, and observing them from his home overlooking their winter habitat on Roberts Bay. Kerry will present an exciting audio-visual presentation about the life of a Bufflehead in collaboration with Ed.
